Kerala is one of India's most expensive states to travel in — but it doesn't have to cost a fortune. With the right approach, you can have an extraordinary Kerala experience on ₹2,000–3,000 per person per day (including accommodation, food, transport, and activities).

Getting Around Cheaply
Government Buses — The Budget Workhorse
Kerala's KSRTC and private bus network is extensive. Kochi to Munnar: ₹110 (4 hours). Munnar to Thekkady: ₹80 (3 hours). Thekkady to Alleppey: ₹160 (4 hours). Not as comfortable as a private car, but the roads pass through spectacular scenery and you'll ride with locals.
Shared Jeeps
In mountain areas (Munnar, Wayanad), shared jeeps fill the gap where buses don't run. ₹20–50 per person for most rides.
Government Ferries
The Alleppey–Kottayam government ferry (₹20, 2.5 hours) passes through some of the most beautiful backwaters in Kerala and costs 1/20th of a private boat ride. The Kochi city ferry (₹4–12) is equally essential.
Budget Car Hire
If you have a group of 4, a self-drive car (₹1,500–2,000/day) makes economic sense and gives flexibility. Driving in Kerala is challenging but not impossible — roads are generally good. International licence required.
Eating Cheaply in Kerala
- Meals hotels (Kerala meals restaurants): ₹60–120 for a full rice + curry meal on banana leaf. Unlimited rice, dal, sambar, rasam, 3–4 curries, papad. The best value food in India.
- Toddy shops (shaaps): ₹40–80 for a glass of toddy + ₹80–150 for a fish fry. Incredibly cheap and deeply local.
- KSRTC canteens at bus stations: ₹30–60 for breakfast. Reliable, clean, and very local.
- Street snacks: Banana chips ₹20 (small bag), unnakaya ₹15–20, samosas ₹10.

- Alleppey Beach — free
- Athirappilly Falls — ₹30 entry
- Periyar boat safari — ₹200 (KTDC basic boat)
