Kerala Houseboat Prices 2025: The Complete No-Nonsense Guide

By Quick Kerala Holidays  ·  2025-02-20  ·  6 min read

Kerala houseboat pricing is genuinely confusing — different operators quote wildly different prices for what looks like the same boat. This guide cuts through the noise and gives you actual numbers, what they include, and how to avoid being overcharged.

Types of Houseboats & What They Cost

CategoryPrice Range/NightWhat You Get
Budget (Non-AC)₹4,000–7,0001 BR, fan, basic meals, crew of 2
Standard (AC)₹7,000–12,0001 BR AC, full meals, better crew, sundeck
Premium (AC)₹12,000–18,0001–2 BR AC, gourmet meals, generator, WiFi
Luxury (AC)₹18,000–35,0002–3 BR, private chef, Jacuzzi, premium finish
📋 All prices are per boat per night and typically include: breakfast, lunch, and dinner; fuel; crew wages; and mooring fees. They do NOT include: alcohol, tips, or activity costs.

Alleppey vs Kumarakom — Which Is Better?

Alleppey is the houseboat capital — more operators, more competition, lower prices, and a wider network of canals and Vembanad Lake access. It's livelier, with other boats around, village life on the banks, and easy access to Kuttanad.

Kumarakom is quieter and more upscale. The lake is wider and calmer here, resort-style houseboats dominate, and you'll see more birds (the bird sanctuary is adjacent). Prices are typically 20–30% higher.

💡 Our recommendation: For first-timers on a normal budget — Alleppey. For honeymoons or anniversary trips wanting exclusivity — Kumarakom.

What to Check Before Booking

How to Avoid Being Overcharged

Houseboat touts at the Alleppey jetty will quote ₹15,000–20,000 for boats worth ₹8,000. The best way to avoid this:

  1. Book through your hotel — they have relationships with certified operators
  2. Book through the DTPC (District Tourism Promotion Council) office in Alleppey — they have fixed rates
  3. WhatsApp us — we work directly with operators and pass on trade rates
⚠️ Never pay touts on the jetty. Always visit the boat before paying any deposit. If the boat doesn't match what was shown in photos, you can negotiate or walk away.

Best Time to Book

Peak season (Dec–Jan): Book 3–4 weeks ahead. Prices at maximum — worth it for the perfect weather.
Shoulder season (Oct–Nov, Feb–Mar): Book 1–2 weeks ahead. Best value combination of weather and price.
Monsoon (Jun–Sep): Available with 2–3 days notice. Prices 25–35% lower. Lush landscape but occasional rough weather.
