Theyyam Festival 2025: Dates, Locations & Complete Visitor Guide

By Quick Kerala Holidays  Β·  2025-01-05  Β·  7 min read

Theyyam is unlike anything else you'll experience in India. Part ritual, part performance, part living mythology β€” a performer becomes a deity through hours of costume, make-up, and prayer. When the sacred verses are chanted and the drum rhythms peak, witnesses report a genuinely transcendent atmosphere that no photograph quite captures.

What Is Theyyam?

Theyyam (also written Theyyem) is a ritual art form of northern Kerala β€” specifically Kannur, Kasaragod, and parts of Kozhikode districts. There are over 400 distinct Theyyam forms, each representing a different deity, ancestor, or hero. The season runs from November to May, with the peak falling between December and February.

Unlike Kathakali (performed on a stage for an audience), Theyyam takes place in village temple courtyards (kaavus) as an actual ritual offering. Watching it is participating in it.

Where to See Theyyam: Best Villages

Parassinikadavu (Kannur) β€” Best for First-Timers

The Muthappan Temple here performs Theyyam twice daily (morning and evening), year-round. It's the most accessible Theyyam in Kerala β€” the temple is 20km from Kannur town, easy to reach by bus or auto. Foreigners and non-Hindus are welcome. Photography permitted at a respectful distance.

Kolathunadu Circuit (around Taliparamba)

The most authentic Theyyam experiences are in the village kaavus β€” small outdoor shrines surrounded by paddy fields. Here, Theyyam begins at dusk and runs through to dawn. You'll sit with the village community, not as a tourist. This requires a local guide who knows the schedule.

Kasaragod District

Less touristy than Kannur, with some of the most intense and ancient Theyyam forms. The Muchilottu Bhagavathi and Pottan Theyyam forms here are particularly striking. Accessible from Bekal Fort.
