The world's most elaborate classical dance-drama β 2,000 years of Kerala storytelling through face, hands and eyes
Kathakali is Kerala's most celebrated classical performing art β a combination of dance, drama, music and ritual. Characters from the Mahabharata and Ramayana are portrayed through a unique visual language of 24 hand gestures (mudras), 9 facial expressions (navarasas) and elaborate eye movements. Performers train for 12+ years. The elaborate makeup using natural pigments takes 3β5 hours to apply. The most dramatic characters β the green-faced heroes (Pachcha), red-faced villains (Kathi) β are instantly recognisable. Even without knowing the story, Kathakali is visually hypnotic.
Arrive 45 minutes early to watch the makeup being applied layer by layer. The face painting itself is a meditative performance. Photograph freely.
A Kathakali performer can narrate entire poems using only eye movements and hand gestures β a complete silent language.
Chenda and Maddalam drums with vocalists narrate the story in Sanskrit. The drumming crescendos are physically electric.
All face makeup uses plant-based colours β Chutti (white paste), Pachcha (green from herbs), Kathi (red from berries). No synthetic paint.
Shows typically perform excerpts from Nalacharitham, Duryodhana Vadham or Kalyanasougandhikam β ask the centre for the night's programme.
Most venues in Kochi provide a 15-min English explanation of the mudras and characters before the performance begins.
