Mannarasala Nagaraja Temple near Haripad, Alleppey district, is the largest serpent temple complex in India — and possibly the world. A 16-acre sacred forest contains over 30,000 snake idols of every size, from tiny stone carvings to life-size cobras, placed over centuries by devotees praying for children, skin disease cures, or protection from snake bites. The forest itself is a protected sanctuary — no tree has been cut, no animal harmed in this compound for over 1,200 years. Cobras actually live in the forest in unusually high numbers, and local belief holds that they never bite within the sacred precinct. Most uniquely, the chief priestess (amma) must always be a woman from the founding Brahmin family — an almost unparalleled tradition in Kerala Hindu temples.
Every idol has been placed as an offering by a devotee over 12 centuries — each represents a prayer answered or a wish made. Walking through the forest is a genuinely otherworldly experience.

The main festival (July–August) draws 30,000+ pilgrims daily. Milk is poured over the snake idols, live cobras are worshipped, and childless couples pray for fertility.
The temple is most famous for granting fertility — thousands of families visit annually seeking blessings for children. The serpent deity (Nagaraja) is believed to grant this boon.
The temple pharmacy produces traditional Ayurvedic preparations using herbs from the sacred forest. The snake-plant connection in Ayurveda is ancient — cobra venom is used in some preparations.
