✦ Overview

What Is Panchakarma?

Panchakarma is Ayurveda's masterpiece — a sequential five-treatment detoxification programme that systematically cleanses the body's tissues (dhatus), channels (srotas) and organs. "Pancha" means five; "karma" means action. The five treatments — Vamana (therapeutic emesis), Virechana (purgation), Basti (medicated enema), Nasya (nasal cleansing) and Raktamokshana (bloodletting) — are selected and sequenced by a resident vaidya based on your specific health condition and dosha balance. Unlike most detox programmes, Panchakarma is both a cure and a prevention — it removes the accumulated toxins (ama) that are the root cause of all disease according to Ayurvedic theory. Kerala is the only place on earth where authentic Panchakarma has been practised continuously for over 3,000 years.

⭐ Key Benefits

What to Expect

🩺

Vaidya Consultation (Mandatory)

Every Panchakarma begins with a minimum 2-hour pulse diagnosis (nadi pariksha) with the resident Ayurvedic physician. The programme is completely customised — no two patients receive the same treatment.

🌿

Poorvakarma (Preparation Phase)

Before the 5 treatments begin, 3–7 days of Snehana (internal and external oleation) and Svedana (medicated steam) prepare the body by loosening toxins from tissues and moving them toward elimination channels.

💊

The Five Treatments

Vamana (controlled vomiting for Kapha), Virechana (purgation for Pitta), Basti (enema for Vata), Nasya (nasal cleansing for head disorders), Raktamokshana (bloodletting for skin/blood conditions). Not all five are always used.

🥗

Pathya — Therapeutic Diet

A strict diet (pathya) is mandatory throughout. Primarily simple, warm, easily digestible foods — rice gruel (kanji), moong dal, steamed vegetables. Alcohol, cold food and spice are completely avoided.

🌧

Monsoon Is Best

Karkidaka Chikitsa — the traditional Panchakarma season in the Malayalam month of Karkidakam (Jul–Aug) — is when the humid, cool monsoon conditions maximise oil absorption and detox efficacy.

📅

Paschatkarma (Recovery)

After the main treatments, a recovery phase of 3–7 days with dietary guidance, herbal medicines and gentle yoga gradually restores normal function. Rushing back to regular life negates the benefits.
