📍 Fort Kochi, Cochin
Colonial heritage meets Kerala culture
Fort Kochi is Kerala's most cosmopolitan quarter — Portuguese, Dutch, Jewish and British layers of history compressed into a few square kilometres. The Chinese fishing nets at sunset, Kathakali performances, Jew Town's antique lanes and the legendary Kerala spice market make it an unmissable first stop.
- Fort Kochi is very safe for solo travellers and families
- Use government ferries — avoid unregistered boat touts
- Keep bags close in the Jew Town antique market area
- Tap water is not safe to drink — use bottled water
📍 Munnar, Western Ghats
Tea estates, misty peaks & cool mountain air
Munnar sits at 1,600m in the Western Ghats — surrounded by 80,000 acres of tea, cardamom and eucalyptus. The drive up from Cochin alone is one of South India's great road experiences. Eravikulam National Park is home to the endangered Nilgiri Tahr, and Top Station has some of Kerala's finest panoramic views.
- Mountain roads are winding — avoid night driving
- Eravikulam NP closes Feb–Mar for calving season — check ahead
- Altitude: mild acclimatisation may be needed first night
- Leeches on forest trails June–September — wear covered shoes
📍 Alleppey (Alappuzha), Kerala Backwaters
Houseboats, canals & the Venice of the East
Alleppey is the houseboat capital of Kerala and gateway to Vembanad Lake — India's longest lake. The 900km network of canals, rivers and lakes that makes up the Kerala backwaters is most accessible here. A night on a houseboat — sleeping to the sound of water, waking to kingfishers and morning mist — is one of India's great travel experiences.
- All houseboats must have ATDC green certification — check before boarding
- Life jackets must be on board — verify before departure
- No swimming in the backwaters (river traffic + water quality)
- Monsoon open-lake sailing can be rough — stick to canals
- Light cotton clothes (Kerala is tropical — avoid synthetics)
- One warm layer for hill station destinations (Munnar, Wayanad)
- Comfortable walking shoes + flip-flops for beach/temple
- Sunscreen SPF 50+ and insect repellent (DEET-based)
- Universal power adapter (Indian plugs: Type C & D)
- Modest clothing for temple visits (shoulders + knees covered)
- Reusable water bottle (refill from hotel — don't drink tap water)
- Small daypack for excursions
- Copies of travel documents (passport, insurance, booking confirmations)
- Basic first aid: antihistamine, electrolytes, antidiarrhoeal
