Kerala is the birthplace of Ayurveda — the world's oldest holistic healing system, practised here for 5,000 years
Kerala is the only state in India where classical Ayurveda is practised in its purest, most complete form. The cool, humid climate — especially during monsoon (Jun–Sep) — is ideal for treatments as open pores absorb medicated oils better. A Kerala Ayurveda experience ranges from a single Abhyanga (oil massage) to a 21-day Panchakarma (full body detox). Authentic treatments are performed by certified vaidyas (Ayurvedic physicians) using in-house prepared herbal oils. Look for centres with a resident vaidya and their own pharmacy — these are the genuine ones.
The foundation of all Ayurvedic treatments — warm medicated oil massage by two therapists working in synchronized rhythm. 60–90 minutes. Deeply relaxing.
Warm oil poured in a continuous stream onto the forehead for 45 minutes. Treats insomnia, anxiety, migraines. Profoundly meditative.
The complete 5–21 day detoxification — Vamana, Virechana, Basti, Nasya, Raktamokshana. Only genuine Kerala vaidyas can prescribe this.
Sit inside a wooden box while medicinal herbs are boiled to create steam. Opens pores, relieves joint pain and detoxifies skin.
Ghee-filled rings placed over the eyes to nourish them — treats dryness, early cataracts and screen fatigue.
Real Ayurveda begins with a vaidya consultation. Your body type (dosha) is assessed and treatments customised. Avoid "Ayurveda spas" without a vaidya.
