Float silently through Periyar Tiger Reserve on a bamboo raft — the best wildlife encounter in South India
Bamboo rafting in Periyar Tiger Reserve is one of Kerala's most extraordinary wildlife experiences — and one of its best-kept secrets. You float silently on a raft of bamboo poles through the heart of the 925 sq km reserve, guided by a trained tribal forest watcher. Because the raft makes almost no noise, wildlife comes within metres. The Periyar Lake edge is a critical watering point for elephants, Indian bison (gaur), sambar deer, otters, and occasionally tigers. This is the best way to see Periyar's wildlife — better than any jeep safari.
Periyar has over 900 elephants. Herds regularly come to the lake edge at dawn and dusk — the raft floats silently to within 30 metres.
Periyar has one of India's largest smooth-coated otter populations. Watch them dive, wrestle and fish in the early morning light.
200+ bird species including the Malabar pied hornbill, kingfishers, cormorants, and the rare Malabar trogon along the forest edge.
Your guide is from the Mannan or Paliyan tribal community — their forest knowledge is unparalleled. They spot wildlife you'd never see alone.
The raft is made from giant bamboo — each one lasts 3–4 trips before being returned to the forest. You help pole it yourself.
Setting off at dawn, you experience sunrise over the still lake with forest sounds — one of India's most serene natural moments.
