Kerala has 12 recognised trekking routes β from Munnar's Chembra Peak to the ancient Agasthyamalai wilderness
Kerala's Western Ghats β one of the world's 8 biodiversity hotspots β offer some of South India's finest trekking. The routes pass through shola forests, grasslands (called Vattavadas), tea estates, and river valleys. Unlike the Himalayas, these are lush, green treks with rich wildlife. Chembra Peak (2,100m) near Wayanad is the most popular; Meesapulimala (2,640m) is the highest accessible peak; Agasthyamalai in Thiruvananthapuram district is one of the last pristine wilderness treks in India. Forest Department permits are required for most routes.
The most popular trek in Kerala β 3 hours up, spectacular heart-shaped lake (Hridayathadaka) at the top. Total 8km round trip from Meppadi.
Kerala's second highest peak (2,640m) β a 2-day trek through Rhododendron forests and high grasslands. Stunning sunrise from the top.
Wayanad's best day trek β through dense shola forest to an ancient cave with 3,000-year-old rock art. 4km each way.
Wilderness trek in Thiruvananthapuram β home to lion-tailed macaques, Nilgiri marten, and extremely rare birds. 3-day permit trek.
Many Munnar treks pass through working tea estates β the combination of high altitude, tea scent and mist is extraordinary.
Half-day trek through Sholayar forest reserve to viewpoints above Athirappilly Falls β Kerala's largest waterfall.
