Built in 629 AD by a Kerala king who met Prophet Muhammad — India's oldest mosque, a symbol of Kerala's ancient religious harmony
Cheraman Juma Masjid in Methala, Kodungallur is the oldest mosque in India and one of the oldest in the world outside Arabia. According to tradition, Cheraman Perumal — a Chera king of Kerala — abdicated his throne, converted to Islam after meeting Prophet Muhammad in Arabia (628 AD), and died before returning to Kerala. He sent a letter with Arab merchants asking them to build a mosque at Kodungallur, which was done in 629 AD during the Prophet's lifetime. The mosque was renovated several times but maintains its original structure in parts — notably the traditional Kerala lamp (nilavilakku) inside, which stands alongside Islamic prayer elements, symbolising Kerala's extraordinary tradition of interfaith harmony.
The most remarkable feature — a traditional Kerala brass oil lamp (nilavilakku) stands inside the mosque next to the mihrab (prayer niche). This syncretic symbol represents 1,400 years of Keralite religious harmony.
A Kerala king who abdicated to convert to Islam after meeting the Prophet — the first recorded Indian Muslim convert. He died in Oman on his return journey. His story is documented in Arab chronicles and Kerala folklore.
Parts of the original 7th century structure survive — particularly the wooden architecture of the inner hall, which follows traditional Kerala style rather than Mughal or Arabic mosque design.
Kerala's Muslim community — the Mappilas — are among Asia's oldest Muslim communities, descended from Arab traders who married local women from the 8th century onward. Distinct culture, language and culinary tradition.
The Mappila Pattu tradition — devotional and romantic songs in a unique Malayalam-Arabic blend — is a 1,000-year art form still celebrated in Malabar region festivals.
Kodungallur has within 2km: India's first mosque, Kerala's oldest Christian site (St. Thomas 52 AD), and the Bhagavathi temple. No other location in Asia has this concentration of ancient multi-faith heritage.
