The Apostle Thomas arrived in Kerala in 52 AD — the oldest Christian communities outside Palestine, still worshipping in 2,000-year-old traditions
Kerala is home to one of the oldest Christian communities in the world — predating the arrival of Christianity in most of Europe. The Apostle Thomas (Doubting Thomas of the Gospels) arrived on the Malabar Coast at Cranganore (modern Kodungallur) in 52 AD and established 7 churches across Kerala before his martyrdom in Chennai in 72 AD. These communities — called St. Thomas Christians, Nasranis, or Syrian Christians — maintained their faith for 1,500 years before the arrival of European missionaries, preserving ancient Syriac liturgical traditions, wooden church architecture, and a unique culture that blends Jewish, Hindu and Christian elements. The oldest surviving church buildings in Kerala date to the 16th century, but all of them stand on the site of the original 1st-century structures.
Cranganoré/Palayur — the site of St. Thomas's first church in India. The current stone church stands on the original location. Ancient oil lamps, stone crosses and a 2,000-year tradition.
St. Mary's Church, Kottayam — one of the oldest surviving church buildings. Contains original oil paintings from 1579, stone inscriptions in Pahlavi and Syriac scripts, and a unique blend of Eastern Orthodox architecture.
The St. Thomas Christians still conduct mass in West Syriac — the liturgical language of the ancient Syrian Orthodox church. The same language family as the Aramaic spoken by Jesus.
Kerala's Syrian Christians maintain many Hindu customs — caste names, marriage rituals, Namboodiri-influenced architecture, and Sanskrit-derived Malayalam Christian vocabulary. A 2,000-year cultural fusion.
Built 1505 by Portuguese — one of only 8 Basilicas in India. The interior features stunning baroque paintings. Fort Kochi's cathedral is the oldest European church in India (at this location).
Kerala's ancient churches celebrate Christmas with midnight mass in Syriac — one of the most authentic Christmas experiences possible. The candlelit service in a centuries-old stone church is unforgettable.
