Why Visit Guruvayur Temple?

Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple is considered the most sacred Vaishnava shrine in Kerala and one of the most important Krishna temples in India. The presiding deity β€” Guruvayurappan β€” is the same four-armed Lord Vishnu/Krishna form worshipped at Dwarka, brought to Kerala by Brahaspati (Guru) and Vayu (the wind god) when Dwarka submerged under the sea. The temple attracts over 50,000 devotees on ordinary days, making it more densely visited per square kilometre than Tirupati. The elephant sanctuary at Punnathur Kotta (2km away), housing 60+ temple elephants, is a major attraction. Non-Hindus cannot enter the inner sanctum.
