The most visited temple in Kerala β Lord Krishna's most sacred abode and home to 60+ living temple elephants
Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple is considered the most sacred Vaishnava shrine in Kerala and one of the most important Krishna temples in India. The presiding deity β Guruvayurappan β is the same four-armed Lord Vishnu/Krishna form worshipped at Dwarka, brought to Kerala by Brahaspati (Guru) and Vayu (the wind god) when Dwarka submerged under the sea. The temple attracts over 50,000 devotees on ordinary days, making it more densely visited per square kilometre than Tirupati. The elephant sanctuary at Punnathur Kotta (2km away), housing 60+ temple elephants, is a major attraction. Non-Hindus cannot enter the inner sanctum.
The idol is made of Pathala Anjanam (a rare stone) and represents the four-armed Vishnu/Krishna. It is said to be the same idol Brahma gave to Krishna. No face photography allowed.
60+ temple elephants 2km from the temple. You can feed, photograph and interact with them daily 7AMβ6PM. Entry βΉ50. The largest captive elephant congregation in the world.
Guruvayur is where Malayalis most want to get married β thousands of weddings happen here daily. Thidambu (idol procession) during weddings is an exclusive blessing.
The temple's continuous Nadaswaram (traditional wind instrument) performance in the Namaskara Mandapam creates the most devotional atmosphere in Kerala.
Guruvayur Ekadashi (November) is the most sacred festival β Krishnanattam is performed for 8 consecutive nights. Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims attend.
The only place in the world where Krishnanattam (17th century dance-drama of Krishna's life) is performed β exclusively by the Guruvayur Devaswom troupe inside the temple compound.
