The sacred 8-night cycle narrating Krishna's complete life β performed exclusively at Guruvayur Temple since the 17th century
Krishnanattam is one of the most sacred and exclusive classical performing arts in India β performed exclusively within the precincts of Guruvayur Sri Krishna Temple, by a dedicated troupe of performers maintained by the Guruvayur Devaswom (temple trust). Created in the 17th century by King Manavedan Raja of Calicut, who composed 8 Sanskrit plays narrating the complete life of Krishna, Krishnanattam predates Kathakali and is considered one of its primary ancestors. The 8-night cycle β Avataram, Kamsavadham, Swayamvaram, Banauyudham, Vivahah, Vividhavadham, Kamsavadham and Swargarohanam β must always be performed in sequence. Devotees request specific nights to be performed as offerings (vazhipadu) to Lord Krishna.
Krishnanattam is a religious offering β devotees pay for specific nights to be performed as a prayer (vazhipadu). This is not a tourist show but a living ritual. Visitors are welcome to watch with respect.
The makeup system predates Kathakali and uses similar techniques β but Krishna characters wear a distinctive blue-green face (representing his divine complexion). The peacock feather crown is iconic.
Each of the 8 nights covers a phase of Krishna's life β from his birth (Avataram) to his ascent to heaven (Swargarohanam). The cycle has been performed continuously since the 17th century.
Krishnanattam directly inspired Kottarakkara Thampuran to create Kathakali β he requested to borrow the Guruvayur troupe and was refused, so he created his own. Without Krishnanattam there is no Kathakali.
The performers are exclusively employed by the temple trust. They are trained from childhood and dedicated to this single art form. No other institution can perform Krishnanattam.
Performances take place in the temple's open-air courtyard, illuminated by traditional oil lamps. The setting β ancient stone temple, flickering oil lamps, night sky β is incomparably atmospheric.
Our cultural packages include krishnanattam performances, backstage access and expert guides who explain the art in depth.
