✦ Overview

What Is Mohiniyattam?

Mohiniyattam β€” literally "dance of Mohini" (the enchantress avatar of Vishnu) β€” is Kerala's solo classical female dance form. Distinguished by its lasya quality: a soft, swaying, feminine grace that mimics the movement of palm fronds in a gentle breeze. The costume is distinctive β€” a white Kerala sari with gold border (set mundu), hair adorned with jasmine, and eyes outlined dramatically with kajal. The form nearly disappeared in the 19th century before being revived by the poet-scholar Vallathol Narayana Menon through Kerala Kalamandalam in the 1930s. Today it is one of India's eight classical dance forms, performed on concert stages and temple forecourts across Kerala.

⭐ Key Elements

What Makes It Extraordinary

🌊

Lasya β€” Feminine Grace

Unlike the angular, sharp movements of Bharatanatyam, Mohiniyattam moves like water β€” circular, undulating, never abrupt. The hip sways and eye movements are hypnotic.

🀲

24 Mudras (Hand Gestures)

The Hastha Lakshana Deepika text defines 24 mudras used in Mohiniyattam β€” fewer than Kathakali's 64, but each carries profound meaning within the dance narrative.

The White-Gold Costume

The set mundu β€” white Kerala sari with gold (kasavu) border β€” is unique to Mohiniyattam. Combined with jasmine flowers in braided hair, it evokes the image of Mohini herself.

πŸ‘

Navarasas Through Eyes

Expressive eye movement (nethra abhinaya) is central β€” performers train for years to convey all 9 emotions (sringara, hasya, karuna, raudra, vira, bhayanaka, bibhatsa, adbhuta, shanta) through their eyes alone.

🎡

Sopana Sangeet

Mohiniyattam is accompanied by Sopana Sangeet β€” Kerala's own temple music tradition, using the veena, mridangam and edakka drum. Softer and more meditative than Carnatic music.

Devotional Narratives

Repertoire draws from Manipravalam literature β€” a mix of Sanskrit and Malayalam verse. Stories of Radha-Krishna, Sita's separation, and Mohini's deceptions are central themes.
