Medicated oil administered through the nostrils — Ayurveda's most direct route to the brain for sinuses, memory and head disorders
Nasya is one of the five Panchakarma treatments — the cleansing of the nasal passages and administration of medicated oils or powders through the nostrils. In Ayurveda, the nose is considered the "gateway to the brain" (shirasya dvaaram), and nasal administration bypasses the blood-brain barrier to directly nourish cerebral tissue. A Nasya session begins with gentle facial massage and steam inhalation to open the nasal passages, followed by the instillation of 5–10 drops of prescribed medicated oil into each nostril. The patient lies with the head tilted back, breathes the oil deep into the sinuses, and the therapist massages the neck, shoulders and palms to encourage absorption.
The nasal mucosa has direct vascular connections to cerebral circulation — Nasya oils reach brain tissue within minutes. Brahmi oil improves memory; Anu tailam clears mental fog.
The most effective natural treatment for chronic sinusitis, nasal polyps and allergic rhinitis. The medicated oil coats and soothes inflamed mucosa while clearing accumulated kapha.
A 7-day Nasya course is prescribed for chronic migraines. Reducing Vata and Pitta accumulation in the head region addresses the root cause rather than just symptoms.
Nasya improves voice quality, treats hoarseness, and is prescribed for thyroid conditions, premature greying, and loss of smell — all considered "above-the-shoulder" disorders in Ayurveda.
Certain Nasya formulations improve eyesight, reduce eye strain, and are prescribed for early-stage ophthalmic conditions — the nasal-orbital connection in Ayurveda is well documented.
Anu Tailam (general wellness), Brahmi Ghritam (memory and intelligence), Ksheerabala (nervous system), Vacha oil (speech and clarity). Each is prescribed specifically by the vaidya.
