Pizhichil — literally "squeezing" in Malayalam — is one of the most luxurious and therapeutically powerful Ayurveda treatments. Medicated oil, warmed to precise body temperature, is squeezed from cloth pads held by 4 therapists who simultaneously pour and massage the oil over every part of the body for 60–90 uninterrupted minutes. The entire body is essentially bathed in warm medicated oil. Originally developed for Kerala's royal families — it requires vast quantities of expensive medicated oil (3–5 litres per session) and 4 trained therapists — making it the costliest of all classical treatments. The therapeutic effect combines the benefits of Abhyanga, Svedana and deep oil penetration simultaneously.
Pizhichil was historically available only to Kerala's royal families — the cost of 4 therapists and 3–5 litres of medicated oil per session made it impossible for ordinary people. Today still a premium experience.
Unlike Abhyanga which applies oil in strokes, Pizhichil floods the entire body surface simultaneously. The sensation of warm medicated oil flowing from head to toe continuously is profoundly disorienting in the best way.
Pizhichil is the primary Ayurveda treatment for hemiplegia (partial paralysis) and nervous system disorders. The oil penetration combined with warmth stimulates nerve regeneration and muscle tone restoration.
